Part 10: The Gathering

Instead of taking me back to my house, Dustin now pedaled towards his. It was a long trip, and uphill most of the way, but he rode hard and we soon arrived. He was breathing hard when we pulled into his driveway. Not bothering to park his bike Dustin simply leaped off and ran inside, pulling me by the arm and talking as he went.

“Oh man, Max!” he cried. “If there are more Demodogs in Hawkins we are so screwed!”

“What's a Demodog!?” I asked.

Dustin didn't bother answering. We rushed through his living room, past his mother who was snoring loudly in front of the television screen, and into his bedroom. Once we were there he slammed his door shut behind us and then pulled a large radio out from under his bed. He switched it on and began to shout into it.

“To anyone on the net: this is a code red. I repeat, this is a code red! Contact me immediately. We need to meet!” He paused and stared intently at the radio. A second later I heard a response.

“It's Mike. I'm on my way.”

“Lucas here. I'll see you soon.”

“See you guys soon. Will, over and out.”

One by one the friends acknowledged Dustin's urgent cry for help. Once the last one has sounded off the curly headed boy turned and beamed at me.

“Don't worry Max, we'll have this problem sorted out in no time!” he said.

It took less than twenty minutes for Dustin's three companions to arrive at his house. In no time at all I found myself seated in a circle with all of their eyes fixed on me.

“Okay Max,” Lucas said to me. “Just tell us exactly what you saw.”

At first, I was hesitant, but I did as instructed and went step-by-step through every part of my evening. As I recounted my tale the boys exchanged knowing glances between each other, and I was relieved to see that they believed my story. After I finished, I sat silently and waited for one of them to speak.

“Well,” Mike began. “It seems apparent that the Demodogs are back in town.”

The others nodded.

“But what are they?” I asked. “And what do they want?”

“That's where things get hazy,” Will answered. “They seem to be able to travel across or through different worlds!”

“You mean, from other Roblox servers?” I asked.

“Yeah, something like that!” Will replied. “But why, or how, no one seems to know. The government here has been monitoring the issue for some time but they never tell anyone what they know.”

“We need answers though!” I cried. “I got a close look at that creature. It seemed extremely dangerous! Surely someone can give us help. Chief Hopper perhaps?”

“Ha!” Lucas laughed. “That cop won't help us! For all we know, he's working with the government cronies!”

“There is one person who could probably help us,” Mike said softly. The other three boys looked at him but said nothing.

“Who?” I asked, wanting in on this inside secret the four of them shared.

Mike looked back at me.
